Mappel Bench: A Unique Urban Seat Inspired by Maple Seeds

This innovative urban seat, designed by Davood Abbasi, draws inspiration from the form of a maple seed. Abbasi was captivated by the complete and harmonious shape of the seed, which led to the creation of Mappel Bench.

What sets Mappel Bench apart from other seating options is its use of natural and organic curves. The ergonomic and bionic forms of the bench provide a comfortable sitting experience, ensuring that users can relax and enjoy their surroundings.

The seat is made from woodplast, a sustainable alternative to wood, while the structure is constructed from stainless steel, ensuring both durability and a visually compelling look.

Mappel Bench is designed as a double modular bench, allowing it to be used solo or in pairs. Each module measures approximately 3 by 1.8 meters and resembles a seed cut in half. When placed together, the modules complete the form of the seed, creating a visually striking and cohesive design.

Not only does Mappel Bench offer ergonomic seating, but it also enhances the visual scenery of urban spaces. The soft flow of curves, inspired by the maple seed, blends seamlessly with the surroundings, creating a harmonious and inviting atmosphere.

The design process for Mappel Bench began in early January 2015 and was completed by late February of the same year. Throughout the project, extensive research was conducted, focusing on natural mechanisms and bionic design principles.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was incorporating the ergonomic feature into the unique form of the bench. However, through creative problem-solving and technical expertise, Abbasi successfully achieved a balance between form and function.

Mappel Bench has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2015, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional creativity, technical excellence, and innovation. Mappel Bench, with its remarkable level of excellence and aesthetic appeal, truly deserves this accolade.
